I've upped the security with new registrants in the hope to deter single posts. Hopefully this will also help a little.

Hey everyone,

Hope you all had a good Christmas, and a happy new year!

I have to apologise for not making my self clear about the report spam button. Its not a button at all but in fact a link that sits above the buttons at the lower right of each post.

This link now reads 'Report as spam' where as before it was 'Report to moderator'.

Sorry about the confusion.

This is always an unfortunate side effect of having such an open forum on a website. The forum has to be as open as it is, firstly so that people can get instant access to the content of the site, and secondly to ease the administrative work associated with the stricter signup system.

It appears that the more recent spam is actually been put up by real people, judging by the poor attempt of taking part in some random forum topic. There is no automatic way of countering this, short of removing the ability to post links, but that would have a negative effect on genuine links posted by genuine people.

We have enlisted the help of others to try moderate the forum better. You can help the moderators by clicking the report spam link at the bottom right of each post you suspect to be spam or inappropriate for this forum. This will then list the posts in the moderator section of the site so they can be dealt with quickly as possible.

Thanks for your patient ad future help with reporting spam :)

Bugs and Errors / Forum Errors - All members please read!
« on: February 24, 2010, 06:02:15 PM »
First of all, the forum has not been hacked. The corruption is due to a database error that was outside of my control.

Secondly, the large number of members without posts is to be expected. Access to various part of the site is locked until your a member on the forum. So it is not anything unusual.

The site's forum has suffered a crippling corruption that disabled access to the site for some days.

What this means is that I have had to restore a fairly old version of the message board's database. This means that anyone who registered after November ( or there about ) of last year will have to re-register for now.

Our host was unable to provide us with a working backup of the database, apparently the corruption exists in all the backups they have.

I will now have to manually add everyone's effected account that has posted on the forum.

If your account has been effected but you have never posted on the forum, then please just re-register.

If your account has been effected and you have posted on the forum, then register a new account. Then e-mail me at dafydd@jmbarrie.co.uk with your old account name, your new account name and a reference to any post you made in the past. I will then attempt to link your old posts to you new account. This is a manual process so please bare with me.

Please accept my sincerest apology for the inconvenience this has caused.

Database / Re: restored database

I'm afraid the database is not working at the moment.  It tells you how many hits it found, but tosses back a PHP error rather than actual content.  :(

Hey JAQ, sorry about this error, was a small problem that i've now corrected. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Hello there,

I've changed the theme and removed the problem with *. I've also removed the ranking system so that everyone is now a Member.

I've also changed your post and quoted all the colored text, I hope you dont mind, but I think this makes it clearer.

Let me know how it goes for you.

I've setup a new forum in the attempt to stop all this spam. I have also pruned many users who were inactive or had not posted anything.

I need to work on the theme, let me know if its problem for some of you, I will upload some new themes asap.
