Peter Pan / Peter Pan sequel commissioned by GOSH
« on: June 26, 2006, 04:17:36 PM »
This has been said before, so at the risk of overdoing, I still believe no one, cept Barrie, can capture Peter (though there are those who've met and played with him, and had quite a game!). These days I never come to these ghastly simpiflied versions with sequals and prequels (Starcathers, Hook, whatever), but  Geraldine McCaughrean's own take sounds interesting, and I think I'll be tempted to take a look at it when it comes out. Hmm...

Yet these 'Lost Girl' things, in my worthless opinion, sound really...not good!

Oh, well, again, in the end, the youth always escapes anyway, so..."there's Peter still."

Davies Family / Alice Hargreaves and Peter Llewelyn-Davies
« on: June 18, 2006, 02:46:12 AM »
Just wondering, I went through a summer day in reading Carroll for myself and for my nephew, and part of that involved viewing the film Dreamchild. Upon first finding that, I remember a mention of Alice Liddell meeting Peter Llewelyn-Davies at Columbia University on the centennial of Dodgson's birth. I was wondering if any of you people knew something about it? Just curious...

This film thrilled me...well, in some ways. Mostly just Milliar and Potter's take on the relationship between Alice and the mathematician, who dreamed in pictures (another rich performance by Ian Holm) and set me pretending many things. Also apart from Alice's own coming to grips with her old friend, I was often looking out the window, waiting...

Unlike Barrie, only met this fellow a few times, so I do not yet find a way that even the child within me could say if this really was Dodgson or Carroll or whoever.

But one thing had me laughing. Several interviewers coming to meet the 80 year-old Alice, and they're wondering why people are so interested in her. One replies, "It's like Peter Pan, but Alice was actually real."

I couldn't help but laugh a little at that! Until they returned to the golden afternoon where the stories were first told, and even though Carroll is so very different from Barrie, like a flute to a drum, I found myself smiling.

A heartless smile comes out much more with Mr. Birkin's take on a real dreamchild. Right now I'm thinking of that scene where Barrie tells George about cutting out a mother's heart, and then another with the glory of Michael's socks...

Enough, along with the question, just thought I share that. Peace!

General topic / growing up...
« on: June 15, 2006, 11:26:23 AM »
Well, this is quite an old post, and had it been asked now, I would have answered differently, or been wise enough not to answer at all. I know I'm certainly not sharp or keen on much (and I fail to pick up on grasping the last post!?), but most certainly the seeds of Peter Pan rest in his own childhood as well being spread like jam all over his life.

I could go on and on talking about this, but I feel like only saying one thing. In the words of Andrew Birkin, "Peter Pan is the boy who would not grow up. Whereas Barrie was the boy who could not grow up. Big difference."

Peace!

Davies Family / Nico
« on: September 05, 2005, 03:12:19 AM »
This is probobly found somewhere in Barrie's writings (or in Andrew's book), but besides in Peter Pan, did Nico have his own character as the other boys?

Peter Pan / Peter Pan (2003)
« on: July 31, 2005, 03:38:59 AM »
I don't know if Andrew had anything to do with this movie, I didn't really care for the 2003 film version of Peter Pan (except perhaps for the "I do Believe in Faries" scene...that was interesting...except there was no clapping).

Anyway, I was wondering if Andrew did any interviews or something for the DVD.

General topic / David

Perhaps this is a rather silly question, or perhaps it's been asked before, but I was wondering whether there are any pictures of J.M. Barrie's brother, David.

In fact, if I'm correct (but I may very well be wrong) besides, J.M. Barrie and his parents there seems to be no pictures of his first family.

JMBarrie / The Man Who Was Peter Pan
« on: June 09, 2005, 03:59:32 AM »
I have been searching for that play for quite some time.

According to the bonus features on Finding Neverland, I've heard some interesting details, but was I wondering if anyone knew where to find it.

The man, who wrote it also wrote a musical for Little Woman...but on that site there's not much information...and the web always directs me straight to Finding Neverland (I know the script was based on this play). Even on this Peter Pan website, I couldn't find much help...anyone know...has anyone read it?

Andrew, I think you read the script...but not the play...or am I wrong?

General topic / Half and Half...Betwixt and Between

"I do loathe explanations" so I better not explain what I am about to write, but I'm sure Mr. Birkin can give you the answer you're looking for.

I found Uncle Jim to be neither a boy or a man (half-n half)...but oh, how he was wishing to discover what he was!

I haven't gotten to Tommy and Grizel yet, but I heard that Tommy can't become a man...he writes about that...it seems to be hidden all through his writings.

JMBarrie / Barrie and Chaplin?
« on: April 27, 2005, 12:32:16 AM »
I seem to be developing a passion for this man, Charlie Chaplin...just I did for Barrie when I read Peter and Wendy. Now I know of the several metions of Chaplin in Mr. Birkin's book (maybe I missed something) but I was wondered if Barrie and Chaplin ever met...or perhaps one of the boys met him (Nico maybe...he seemed to love him)

Peter Pan / Found in the translation?
« on: April 25, 2005, 01:57:18 AM »
A few questions really...

What did Barrie think of the many actresses who played Peter Pan? Or any of them? I know he was displeased with the statue...but I was wondering...

Did he see the first movie version...the silent film (sorry, I can't remember the year it was made)..do you know what he thought of it?

Besides Ian Holm and Johnny Depp are there any other actors that potrayed Mr. Barrie...I don't mean on stage (I know there's The Man Who Was Peter Pan) but on film?

Besides in The Lost Boys, do you, Mr. Birkin, feel that any actor/actress and (or) film has captured the true Peter?

Sorry if it seems a little much, but I'm just filled with questions tonight!

Peter Pan / Peter's "Age"

I know he's really ageless...but what age did Barrie picture him at physically...I once heard it was twelve...or was it younger?

General topic / Contact Mr. Birkin
« on: March 29, 2005, 06:40:33 AM »
I know someone who wishes to write a letter to Mr. Birkin. Is this the only way people can contact, or is there a mailing address...just wondering...I suppose there's a desire to not have others read it and sometimes computers just don't work.
