29 June 1921

An anonymous obituary for Rupert Buxton in Harrow School's own paper, The Harrovian. The portrait of Rupert is very different from the one painted by Boothby, and I would most certainly have included an extract from it in my book had I known of its existence. Many thanks to Nicholas McAulay and Rita Boswell for unearthing it.

I was at Harrow myself in the early 60s, but don't remember ever hearing about "whopping privileges". It might refer to that most jealously guarded of all privileges: the right to flog other boys with a cane. I was certainly thrashed on a number of occasions, but never having risen to Rupert's lofty heights, the right to thrash others was thankfully denied me.
