JMBarrie / Eilean Shona

If anyone is interested in retracing JMB's steps on holiday, here's the place to go. Barrie did write his scenario for a Peter Pan film but his script was never used by Paramount in the end - despite what the article says.  Beautiful island though.

Peter Pan / Peter & Wendy (TV film)
« on: December 20, 2015, 09:54:04 AM »
The new adaptation of the story of Peter Pan will air on ITV on Boxing Day (26 December) at 8pm. This is a retelling of the classic story for the modern age, while remaining faithful to the spirit of Barrie's original tale, and it's the first time a film version places Great Ormond Street Hospital at the heart of the story.

The story starts at GOSH, where 12-year-old Lucy Rose is awaiting treatment for a serious heart condition and discovers Barrie's novel Peter and Wendy. That night she dreams herself off to Neverland...

Stanley Tucci plays the triple role of the surgeon, Mr Darling and Captain Hook, Laura Fraser is Mrs Darling/Lucy's mum, Paloma Faith is Tinker Bell, and newcomers Hazel Doupe and Zac Sutcliffe play the title roles.

Tune in this Boxing Day if you are in the UK. (Overseas viewers will have to wait a little longer for it to come to them, but it will be worth the wait.)

JMBarrie / New plaque to Barrie in Bloomsbury
« on: November 30, 2015, 06:41:53 PM »
A new blue plaque was unveiled on 30 November 2015 on Downing Court, on the corner of Grenville Street and Bernard Street (WC1), commemorating Sir J M Barrie's connection with Bloomsbury. Barrie lived in lodgings on the site in his early years in London, and the house that used to stand at 8 Grenville Street (now the site of Downing Court) was the inspiration for the Darlings' home, where Peter Pan flew in to meet Wendy. The plaque was unveiled by David Barrie, great-great-nephew of Peter Pan's creator and put up thanks to a campaign by the Marchmont Association, with the support of Downing Court residents.

This is the third plaque put up to commemorate Barrie's life in London, and the first in Bloomsbury (apart from the memorial tablets at Great Ormond Street Hospital). The other plaques are at 100 Bayswater Road in Bayswater, opposite Kensington Gardens (where he wrote the play Peter Pan) and at the Adelphi, off the Strand (where he wrote the novel Peter and Wendy).

As Barrie himself described the Darlings' home in the first scene of the play:

"The night nursery of the Darling family, (...) is at the top of a rather depressed street in Bloomsbury. We have the right to place it where we will, and the reason Bloomsbury is chosen is that Mr Roget once lived there. So did we in days when his Thesaurus was our only companion in London; and we whom he has helped to wend our way through life have always wanted to pay him a little compliment, The Darlings therefore lived in Bloomsbury.

It is a corner house whose top window, the important one, looks upon a leafy square
(Ed. Note: this is Brunswick Square) from which Peter Used to fly up to it, to the delight of three children and no doubt the irritation of passers-by."

Peter Pan / New graphic novel of Peter Pan
« on: June 08, 2015, 01:54:50 PM »
Birlinn Publishers from Edinburgh are launching a Peter Pan graphic novel later this month, illustrated by Stephen White and coloured by Fin Cramb, the first ever published in the UK. It's been faithfully and lovingly adapted from Barrie's original play and novel, and references Barrie's and Peter Pan's roots in Scotland as well as dotting the book with visual clues throughout. It's an amazing book, and a must for all Peter Pan and Barrie fans.

Peter Pan / Regent's Park Open Air Theatre production of Peter Pan
« on: April 28, 2015, 03:20:00 PM »
The Open Air Theatre at Regent's Park in London is putting up a new production of the play from 15 May till 14 June.  This is going to be the first chance in 35 years to see Barrie's original play in London! There is going to be one difference though: it is set in 1914, not only to commemorate the centenary of WW1, but also in memory of George Llewelyn Davies, killed in action in 1915.

It will be very interesting to see how they will make Peter Pan and the Darling children fly in an open air theatre, and let's hope the rain stays away for this Neverland.

JMBarrie / Barrie's grave
« on: July 01, 2014, 06:58:17 PM »
Last week came the disturbing news that Barrie's grave in Kirriemuir was vandalised, and stones removed to another part of the cemetery. However, this news seems to have refuelled the debate about the restoration and "embellishment" of his grave for his 150th anniversary in 2010. Despite Barrie's specific wish to be buried in the family grave and not to have any adornments on his tombstone, a wall was erected around it, with an even more controversial plaque. Barrie fans are now asking for the wall (and the infamous plaque) to be taken down altogether, not just to respect Barrie's wishes, but as a matter of taste, and have started a petition.

What do people on this forum think about this? What's your view?

Peter Pan / Dinah Sheridan RIP
« on: November 25, 2012, 09:52:07 PM »
A bit of Peter Pan history passed away today... Dinah Sheridan, who had the distinction of being the first actress to play Wendy and Peter, died today, aged 92.  She first played Wendy in the 1933-1934 tour (opposite Jean Forbes Robertson as Peter Pan) then played Peter during the 1936-37 touring season. Could she be the last actress to have played Peter Pan (in the UK) during Barrie's lifetime? Bruce Hanson wrote very movingly about her and her reminiscences of her acting life in his wonderful book Peter Pan on Stage and Screen 1904-2010. RIP Dinah.

JMBarrie / In memoriam
« on: June 19, 2012, 06:44:57 PM »
JM Barrie died 75 years ago today. Let's all celebrate his life and works, and remember him for his wit, spirit of adventure, generosity and genius. And Peter Pan, of course.
