Barrie and Chaplin?
« on: April 27, 2005, 12:32:16 AM »
I seem to be developing a passion for this man, Charlie Chaplin...just I did for Barrie when I read Peter and Wendy. Now I know of the several metions of Chaplin in Mr. Birkin's book (maybe I missed something) but I was wondered if Barrie and Chaplin ever met...or perhaps one of the boys met him (Nico maybe...he seemed to love him)

Barrie did in fact meet Charlie Chaplin and liked him very much - in fact thought he might play Peter Pan!  You can read the delighted response of Nico to meeting his hero by going to the database, typing Nico Mary Hodgson 1921 and looking at the letter from 1921-09-17 - he  had just dined with Chaplin!

Arg?

Wendy's brother John has Napoleon for a middle name, and in the original performance of the play (and the play as scripted) Peter is dressed as Napoleon after the pirate ship scene.  In addition, Andrew mentioned (I believe on a bonus feature for The Lost Boys) about Stanley Kubrick's intent to make a film about Napoleon (whose script is online but I haven't read it).

again, a topic I started when I was kid has been taken up again after many moons! What gives??

Anyway...

Napoleon? Well, Napoleon has a way of his own (though I feel his landslide everywhere in this non-locality). If you guys want something exhilarating and heartbreaking, do read the script on him that Andrew wrote...it's on this site:

http://www.jmbarrie.co.uk/abpage/

just click the blue letters with his name. I have read this over and over and have never failed to learn a lot each time, not to mention be overwhelmed with the excitment and poetry throughout it. It's a great combustion of the stars!

And, Wendy, if you want to talk about connections, one day give a listen to this radio program (from BBC) about Barrie and Andrew....(just scroll down and click the blue letters: The Lost Boys)

http://anno.co.uk/introduction.shtml

Now that I can't even begin to describe, so I won't spoil it for you. Do give a listen.

Just finished listening to the BBC thing....wow....I almost don't know what to say...that's uncanny...Anno seemed like he had so much left to give the world..I was very impressed with the poetry.

I started noticing a while ago...strange coincidences that seem to happen to people who are into certain stories but especially it seems...with Peter Pan..

The story behind me and my boyfriend (who is on here as Peter Pan) is a little bit more than simply just nicknames for the fun of it and because we're both big kids...have you seen the 2003 movie? I remember finding the Aunt's line about Wendy posessing a "womans chin" to be kind of...well..odd? lol I dunno I guess it was just kind of a peculiar thing to say..to focus on a chin...my boyfriend always thought it was an odd line too...though for some reason I enjoy her romanticized vision of "Slipping in and out of heaven"...but anyhow...to make a long story short...my father (Who's name is George and we are now estranged...heh) and his fiancee gave birth to twin baby brothers and because she had had a C section she ended up back in the hospital with a staph infection. While we were visiting her she was holding one of my brothers and playing with his little chin and then she commented to him...not knowing the Peter Pan movie at all...said "Krista has a womans chin" to most this would seem "meh whatever" but to me and my boyfriend it was something that made our ears perk up and we looked at each other like "what did she just say????"...it was just that neither of us had heard someone say anything remotely similar to the aunt in that movie till then ...we've had a few things like that happen...so it seems to me...that I see a pattern forming...I don't know why ....but I see it....is this odd? The Andrew & Anno thing blew me away...it's all very strange ..and in their case...heartbreaking...

I'm in a very contemplative mood after listening to it...and will definatly be checking out more of Anno's writings.

Letters from Barrie talking about Charlie Chaplin. From “Letters Of J.M. Barrie” by Viola Meynell.

Excerpt from letters from Barrie to Cynthia Asquith:

12 September 1921

We were flung into a pleasurable state of elation yesterday evening by the announcement that Charlie Chaplin had called. The manner of it was somewhat attractive. He asked the housekeeper below if I was alone, and being told that Colonel Freyberg was with me he shuffled and muttered that he had just come to have a look round and stole away. What a triumph if I could have ushered him into the Stanway nursery to teach Simon a new way of walking, also how to fire a custard pudding at his dear Nannie’s face when she mentioned bed. Nicholas’s grand ambition now is to escort him through Eton.

18 September 1921

Nicholas had a great time with Charlie Chaplin who came and stayed till two in the morning. Immaculately dressed in evening garb, and carried all off with ease and skill and grace. He has a rather charming speaking voice, and a brain withal. A very forceful creature and likable.  The police who are put on to guard him all produce their own autograph books for him to sign. The ordinary stage drama he called the ‘Speakies’.
