Title: New prequel book CAPTAIN HOOK

I was browsing the bookstore and discovered that someone has written a children's novel that details the boyhood of one James Hook.  It was written by J.V. hart who supposedly had some writing credit on Spielberg's HOOK (not a ringing endorsement I know!).  It appears that this prequel to PETER PAN has nothing to do with the GOSH work currently in the works.  Does this mean that Barrie's PETER PAN is officially out of copyright protection here in the USA?
