Davies Family / Re: Nico Llewelyn Davies’ 120th Birthday!
« on: December 22, 2023, 06:48:53 PM »
Happy Birthday Nico!  I always enjoyed reading his letter and listening to the audio recordings of his voice.  He seemed to be a man with a genuine sense of humor.  We should all be grateful for his generosity in sharing his family?s story with us.

Davies Family / The Morgue
« on: January 13, 2021, 07:28:18 PM »
I just finished the first two sections of Peter's Morgue with his annotations and comments- right up to to Arthur's death.  Thank you so much for uploading this Andrew.  What a sad story and how perfectly the letters and comments bring their world and the people in it to life.  And thank you Peter - although I know it cost you tremendously to do this.

JMBarrie / Barries funeral
« on: January 10, 2021, 07:53:51 PM »
https://youtu.be/deIV3czQglI  Ha!  I notice that a new video of Barrie’s funeral (this time with sound!) was uploaded in December.  Then I noticed that it was Andrew who did so!  Apologies if everyone has already seen this).  Edit: oh dear!  I now realize this video is in the database!  Sorry!  I had looked at the “video” section of the database a few months ago and there was nothing there.  Now lots of great video. Thanks Andrew!

What a wonderful gift!  I’m a bit laid up after some surgery and having all the new material to go through has been a great joy!  The Boy Castaways always looks like something from a dream.  Thank you Andrew :D

Dear Andrew - thank you so much for beginning the monumental task of uploading the full correspondence between yourself and Nico!  It is fascinating to see the story “develop” in real time as it were. I am also grateful that Nico had such a clear handwriting  - sometimes I have to squint for a minute, but usually I can just read it through.  It was so lucky that one of the boys was still around to help you with the story- and the cheeriest one too!  He seemed to take pleasure from it as well, which is wonderful.

Yes! Do upload any and all letters you have!  I found the newly uploaded letters recently and was (as usual) delighted 😁

I quite got the idea that Nico had NO use for Simon Asquith from his letters!

Thank you for this Andrew!  Having the context for Nico's replies really helps.  (As you might guess from my posts here, Nico has always been my "favorite" among the boys)  Seeing the development of the series and the book is going to be very interesting!

Here is the BFI's description:

Quote

Could this be Peter Pan's summer playground? Croquet, cricket and am-dram Shakespeare on the lawn are just some of the pastimes for guests in this quirky record of JM Barrie's Cotswold house party in summer 1923. Featuring Nicholas Llewellyn Davies - one of the models for Barrie's 'lost boys' - as well as Nico's Eton and Oxford friends, the film captures the madcap antics of a gilded and carefree youth.

JM Barrie first rented Stanway, the Cotswolds home of Lord and Lady Wemyss, in 1921, and held regular summer house-parties thereafter. From 25 July 1923 Barrie invited his secretary Cynthia Asquith (the eldest daughter of Lord Wemyss) and her family, Nicholas Llewellyn Davies and his Eton friends (who arrived in late August and left by 10 September) and a number of other guests. Cricket and croquet matches were a feature of the house parties, and there were 'entertainments' planned - on this occasion the project was to make a film, and a professional cameraman was hired. Barrie wrote the screenplay and most likely the titles, some of which are in verse.

Yep that's him.  He is always the "third wheel" among the couples.  In another part, he is seen dishing out the soup with a sponge.  He is once identified (as "Nicholas") expounding on something or another with another young man.  He is also seen tending wicket.

Here are some sections of The Yellow Week at Stanway - the film of Nico and his friends and their cricket week which was shot in 1923.  Lots of Nico here!  ;D (He's the boy who is having no luck with the ladies)  Poor Nico ;)

Davies Family / Re: Photographs and some thoughts

One thing to remember is that George was in a different "house" at Eton.  Peter was a scholarship boy and therefore a "Colleger" (if I understand the terminology correctly) - one of 70 King's scholars.  George was a paying student and therefore an Oppidan (living in the town as opposed to the College) in a House. (In fact I believe that George had taken the scholarship exam and not won the scholarship, which resulted in Barrie offering to pay his tuition.  Michael did pass the scholarship - I think - but it was decided that he should enter as an Oppidan anyway.  So although they would have seen each other sometimes, it might not have been that often.  Also since Michael was not in College, he and Peter would not have seen each other all that often either.  In contrast both Michael and Nico were in the same House and in fact shared the same room.

If anyone is better acquainted with Eton, please pop in and correct me if I am wrong!! :D

By the way George taking the test for Eton and the disappointment when he did not get the scholarship, gives me a clue as to why Jack went into the Navy.  The Llewelyn Davies were not rich and the boy's education would not normally be something they could pay for, so scholarships and things like appointments to the Navy were ways to ensure they were educated.  After all Arthur and his brothers all won scholarships in their day.  Of course JMB swooping in with his generosity made all that unnecessary, but it had probably been the plan.
