It was 157 years ago today !

No doubt there family tragedies helped cement the bond between them.

Barrie, I see once made 19, paling in comparison to Conan-Doyle's 91.

JMBarrie / Re: What Did Barrie Think Of AA Milne ?

Some quotes from Milne regarding Barrie.

Have you seen Peter Pan ? It's too wonderful to live. My heroes in real life are J.M. Barrie and the editor of the Sheffield Independent.

The difficulty in the way of writing a children's play is that Barrie was born too soon... We who came later have no chance.

I don't know how reliable the site Neverpedia is,however after reading this quote. " Michael's brothers Peter and Nico each later acknowledged suicide as a possible explanation, as did Barrie. However Nico was skeptical of any dark motives, noting reports that the couple had boisterously invited others to come with them that day", I believe (assuming the quote from Nico is accurate) the evidence is pretty overwhelming that this was not a suicide.

Very nice photos. Is there anything left to be seen in Bothwell that's connected to David Barrie ?
JMBarrie / Re: Barrie's letter to Sylvia

For what it's worth, I believe Barrie did have a strong physical attraction to the opposite sex. His letter where he speaks of Sylvia's adorable mouth, and another in which he described an actress in similar terms, do not sound like the language of a man who is asexual. I'm not sure of the psychiatric term, but there is a condition in which a young man may be very attracted to the opposite sex, but he will not attempt an intimate relationship with a woman, because in his mind it would mark the end of his childhood, which he is deeply attached to. As an armchair psychiatrist, that's how I tend to see Barrie.

I just picked up Ann Thwaite's bio of Milne, and it does have quite alot about his friendship with Barrie. Thwaite claims the Llewellyn Davies boys loved Milne as much Barrie did, and that they fought over his book The Holiday Round (1912) when it reached them on the Isle of Harris.

Hope I don't offend anyone, but I loved the 1956 black and white musical with Mary Martin. Martin herself was nothing outstanding, but Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook and Sondra Lee as Tiger Lily, were hilarious and stole the show.

No doubt the deaths of 3 members of his immediate family in 3 years produced some somber periods for him.

Almost forgot. Even a year before her passing, Eiluned Lewis' answer that surely Audrey Lucas (going from memory) was the one, sounds harmlessly suspicious.

Thank you Andrew. I will try to remember to remind you. And also be I forget, I'd like to say how much I enjoyed your book.

After reading Michael's letter of Jan 10 1917 to Eiluned Lewis several times, I'am convinced that he did in fact have quite a crush on the future poet-novelist.

After re-reading your most informative article Nicholas, I'm 99 pct certain that Michael and Rupert's tragic deaths were an unfortunate accident. The 4 to 5 mile walk to Sandford Lock, Rupert's playfully swimming out to the gate and sitting on it, the extremely rare occurence of people committing suicide by drowning (about 2 pct according to an American study) the surprising number of cases in which  the rescuer drowns with the victim the fact that Rupert approached Michael from the front as he was in distress. It all points to this having been an accident.
