Wait...when Wendy grew up in in public domain ...like..that chapter of the book? But the rest of it is not? Do I have that right? so if someone wanted to film it just as it's own short thing...they could?

Peter Pan / The acorn
« on: September 22, 2010, 04:10:29 AM »
I was wondering something...I know in the original it says Peter gives Wendy a button off of his clothes...in the '03 movie it was an acorn......I've read online that the acorn has actually been known to have been worn by women traditionally as some sign or hoping for eternal youth? I think I read this was or is in england...can anyone confirm this? I find the choice of acorn in that case to be kind of interesting. Glad my husband gave me an acorn necklace like the '03 movie haha;)

If by that kind of ending you mean because they wouldn't see their daughter again...i guess that's kind of my point...this book gets away with it so i think it's equally possible for it to have happened the other way around.

I can tell you at one point i too wanted to be a mother but there are other ways of being a mother other than literally giving birth...so I guess you could say I know she thought that way but sometimes i feel it could be because of lack of knowledge at that age...the same thing with peter. I look at what Wendy does and I think she could be considered a mother just as much as one that gave birth. Like adoption or being a foster parent. Not saying thats how BARRIE meant it but that I think Barrie wouldn't want us to be all stuck in a cage and not think outside the box. I began to do this because of his fairy notes and little white bird...while they are not the final product of Peter Pan...they are something to think about.

I guess I also wonder if it was possible she might have had regret much later because even after having Jane when Peter comes back to visit...she actually has the thought of "woman let go" to herself.

I guess it's like this special I saw about Robin Hood...and how it starts off as one thing and as the years progressed you could see how the legend took on new things and characters..I'm not opposed to this happening with todays tales either. Especially when the author took them into consideration himself :)

Well I know a lot of people out there are totally for and can see the Peter and Wendy "relationshippy" stuff but some people are sooooo into the mother thing they can't see how things like that can double over (not addressing you btw regarding my other post). But I find there seems to be two camps..the "no way peter and wendy would ever kiss" kind of crowd (even though they kiss in the nursery in the book)...who think he felt nothing...and the people who are all for things like the '03 movie and maybe even more. I fall into the '03 movie with a lot more confusion and angst..not that they didn't show it but I think it needed to be addressed more so with the novel and with the confusions about the feelings and what a mother is opposed to other things Peter may have felt as well. So the movie does fall short with that I admit for sure. I've always felt..and I think this author (of Hook & Jill) actually captured it a bit in a few parts and THAT did pleasantly suprise me...the fact there was something Peter felt for her more than a mother. I believe it says when Wendy kissed him there WAS a passion there and I guess i think people need to be more open to the idea that yes he probably could feel that (you can feel it at any age..as i said in another post...we're born that way it really isn't something magical that happens at 13..it's just stronger then) but if he had any knowledge about romantic love he probably feared it meant one automatically grows up and that falling in love equals mothers and fathers and children..which is not necessarily the case. If Peter knew he could remain a boy..have his Wendy and be in love and still have fun...I kinda wonder if he would have been nearly as scared..it seems to be the lack of understanding their own emotions and feelings that seems to drive them apart in the end.

For instance in the '03 movie when after the faerie dance wendy asks Peter about his real feelings and what about love...he gets defensive. I've always always wondered....if this was the beginning of the end for Wendy. What if she had been told his true feelings? (Which you can't deny in that version they were there) I kind of think she may not have grown up at all...she wouldn't have given it so much thought...it possibly would have been like it was in Hook & Jill where she would have left her family behind for him you know?

I know there is the camp that says Peter should have grown up for Wendy...but i always wonder why no one says the opposite....perhaps it's because maybe love between children feels impossible or scary to most I don't know...it doesn't happen often but if we were all honest with ourselves...real true love probably doesn't even happen that often in our normal adult world. I just kind of think they could have found paradise together if they had known everything. It's just my thought.

I can appreciate someone basing stuff off their life. I am writing something myself...while also trying to stay in the spirit but a totally different story....it won't change the ending of the original story though. :) It's more of a continuation based on my experiences using those characters. Believe me there were parts I really enjoyed it just kinda left a sour taste somewhere past the mid point :)

I just want to say I have read this now and I'm a little taken aback by it. I think it's well written yes....I like some of the stuff between Wendy and Peter and the Lost Boys but toward the middle it gets very twisted and I do NOT like how a scene between a violent Peter and Wendy was depicted. Very shocking. I didn't care for this book. It has it's good moments but...wow....not for me. That being said I was wondering about peoples opinons of romance between Peter and Wendy and I did like the part where she kissed him. I'm however kind of shocked people are more accepting of this idea the way this book was written than they are of the innocent sweetheart love I've personally come to see in Peter and Wendy...I really can't understand that but to each their own.

Agreed. It just seems there was a few things in the fairy notes along with little white bird that makes me think "hmmm perhaps there is something to this?" i mean yes obviously the mother bond is there but how many men out there seem to need mothering as well as a wife for instance...it's classic! lol

I guess what I'm saying is....children can be very very selfish..but i don't think selfishness automatically means one doesn't "love". We have selfish grown ups too and i think there are selfish people who are in love but are just really messed up individuals. No one is perfect. Children usually do act selfish...they have yet to learn the world doesn't revolve around them..but i still see them crushing on each other pretty early and some...not often but some actually have fallen in love with their future spouse as children....so it's a thought.

Peter Pan / Romance in Peter Pan
« on: August 05, 2010, 02:14:34 AM »
First off I want to start by saying I've always felt Peter was a bit of a confused boy...I've always thought he had feelings for Wendy but never quite knew what it was because of his age and so always associated girls with mothers...that being said.....I enjoyed what the '03 movie did (though they should have included more motherly scenes as well). My question is: Is anyone here fond of this train of thought? Meaning...I know Barrie calls children gay and innocent and "heartless" but at the same time you just know Peter is NOT completely heartless or the abandonment by his mother wouldn't be an issue for him I wouldn't think. It's part of that biggest pretend.

The reason I bring this up is because I've noticed in Barrie's fairy notes he seemed to have ideas for "the boy" and "the girl" to be able to be together forever and even marry....in Little White Bird...he's written Peter and Maimie (Wendy's forerunner) as being very sweet together and him even asking if she'd marry him. Obviously people can say he's a baby in that and really doesn't know what that means but at the same time..how many babies talk? lol I just kind of feel like there is a constant idea of innocent childhood sweetheart kind of love in Barrie's notes and stories...though Peter has been written far more oblivious in the final draft of Pan I don't necessarily think that means the feelings are not there.

I guess this question has gone through my head a bit because me and my husband have nicknamed each other Peter and Wendy because...even though we didn't know each other as children (unfortunately) we feel like we've brought that kind of sweetness to each other. This is why I gave him a picture of Peter and Wendy sitting outside the house in the tree tops watching faeries last christmas....we're very fond of what is elaborated on in the '03 movie (Not sure why people decide to call it sexual tension..I've seen 5 year olds smile at each other in such ways etc So even if they'd made them younger like they should have been I wouldn't have seen a problem. That being said humans are sexual beings and most had crushes in early childhood just as well as in their teens.) and I'm kind of wondering if anyone else got these ideas out of Barrie's notes as well?? I guess you could say I'm kind of open to either elaborations or alternative views of the story at least when it can be derived from Barrie's notes. Thoughts?

Also does anyone know for sure if it's grapes or perhaps christmas holly on her outfit? And the round object on her chest..does anyone know what that is...also in this picture I noticed she seems to be gloved on at least one hand or am i seeing the picture wrong because it's black and white?

Dear TheWendybird,

I also wrote to the V&A Theatre Museum, as I found this:

----------------------------------------------------------------------

PETER PAN 100 YEARS OLD AND STILL FLYING

30 NOVEMBER 2004- 31 JANUARY 2005

The Theatre Museum celebrates the centenary of Peter Pan by J M Barrie, which was given its first performance at the Duke of York's Theatre on 27 Dec 1904 with a display including original costumes and an Edwardian flying harness which helped create the effects which have made the play so magical for generations of children. The Museum is also running a number of costume workshops and storytelling sessions exploring the myth of Peter Pan in different cultures.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Next week I'm visiting the museum. So, in case that I find something interesting for your costume, I'll take a picture and send it to you.

Thank you Christine for being so helpful.

That would be EXTREMELY helpful thank you!

Yes, I did get in touch with the V&A Theatre Museum and have just heard back from them. Disappointing news though, as they told me they have nothing relating to Hilda Trevelyan's original Wendy costume, and no idea of what happened to it... Can anyone on this forum shed a light on what happened to it?

But I agree with you - the magic lantern pictures aren't consistent with the greens of the dress (nor the brown/red of the jacket), and looking again at the photos from the play, it does look as though the strips should be the same colour as the jacket. It would make more sense too, as they look as though they're attached to the jacket, not the dress. Go with your instinct!

Going back to Finding Neverland, it's as if they wanted to make Wendy more boyish with her hair flattened than in the original version, perhaps to make her less twee and more appealing to a contemporary early 21st Century audience. Hilda Trevelyan has her hair styled in what the French call 'anglaises', ie tight ringlets. One wonders where Wendy found curling tongs in Neverland ... but then, you have to suspend disbelief out there, haven't you?

Christine

That's kind of shocking..they lost the costume? wow..i dunno whether to laugh at how crazy that sounds or cry at how tragic that would be if it's true! As for going with my instinct..will do! :)
Hehe yes the ringlets would be hard to believe unless i suppose they were suppose to be natural curls for the character but I'm guessing not. I always liked how Rachel Hurd Wood...Wendy from the 2003 film starts off with really pretty proper london hair...she gets to neverland and begins to look like a pixie herself with the messy locks. Looked cute though! :D

Yeah i just checked..here's an example of what I was talking about..in this picture wendy's full outfit under the cloak is green..not even two toned http://www.flickr.com/photos/24671749@N07/4790836139/in/set-72157624363498725/ So it might be hard to say what was what in the original costume.

I love your fabric, and its colour! Well chosen.

Finding Neverland was indeed off in so many areas, it is somewhat surprising to find they had researched the original costume and tried to keep close to the original. Wendy's costume in the film is very pretty, but I'm not sure about the hat... Or is that because Hilda Trevelyan's hair made it look different? I see that the film has the strips in brown, rather than green as on the pictures of the Magic Lantern but of course that could have been their own interpretation.

You got me interested in this question now so I might contact the the V&A Theatre Museum here (who have many of the original props and archives from the DoY's production) to see if they can shed any light on this. I'll keep you posted.

I thought the hat looked off too...it might be because Hilda's hairstyle is more whispy than the girl in the movie. The girl in the movie seemed to always have her hair in a pulled up style rather than down on her shoulders. I'm thinking the strips might actually be the same color as the jacket as well because if you look at the photos it doesn't come off as the same shade as the dress at all and the thing about artwork i find is that many times things get miscolored by accident...I'll have to click your link again but i think it wasn't green in all the pictures which might mean it was miscolored. I'll check again.

Did you by any chance get in touch with that Museum afterward?

HEY! Thanks so much for your response...I had never seen those pictures before. I'm including links to my photobucket account...I just took some screen captures off the Finding Neverland DVD....I kind of imagine if the dress part IS green that it would be darker than this based on the black and white photos... does this look right to you? I know Finding Neverland is off in other areas so I wasn't sure about the costumes either lol

Any input would be great!

Here is a couple pictures of the fabric I bought for the coat so far...one is with flash and one without because the color is actually somewhere in between and the camera doesn't capture it perfectly.

It does seem to be an autumn color.

Peter Pan / Trying to make Wendy's costume-HELP!
« on: July 25, 2010, 07:08:58 PM »
I am currently trying to make this costume from the original production of Peter Pan- http://www.jmbarrie.co.uk/allscans/fullsize/1905-12-19-PX385.jpg

I remembered the color being kind of cranberry/burgundy in "Finding Neverland" but other than that the costume in the movie seemed a little off to this picture. Is the overcoat near that color in reality? And what about the dress underneath? It looks like it would be more of a brown or something but in Finding Neverland it was a lighter green...in these pictures however it looks to be a darker color. I'm also wondering what the strips of fabric are along the lining of the jacket (where the jacket would zip up)...what the round object on the chest is and is that holly all over the hat? I'm really wanting to make this costume but I have a lot of questions obviously and no idea who to ask other than on here lol
