JMBarrie / Cudlow House, Rustington
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:34:17 PM »
There is a set of pictures on the Peter Pan Gallery on Flickr I took earlier this year of Cudlow House in Rustington, where the famous photographs of Michael Llewelyn Davies dressed as Peter Pan were taken. Nothing left of the lawn nowadays, alas, and the original house has been converted in 3 cottages.

The Rustington Museum also features a permanent exhibition dedicated to JM Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies, which is well worth visiting if you are passing through West Sussex (and it's free).

JMBarrie / JM Barrie's Scotland
« on: October 10, 2011, 07:30:56 PM »
I have added another set of photos on the Peter Pan Gallery on Flickr, this time of different locations in Scotland linked with Barrie: Kirriemuir, Dumfries and Edinburgh (with thanks for the latter to Javier Miralles, a Barrie scholar who took the pictures while he was studying at Edinburgh University last year).

Peter Pan / The ANNOTATED PETER PAN edited by Maria Tatar
« on: September 19, 2011, 04:16:29 PM »
As some of you know, Maria Tatar (Professor of Germanic Languages and Literatures and Folklore and Mythology at Harvard University) has been working for many years on this comprehensive study of Peter Pan and the life of JM Barrie, which is finally going to be published on 11 October by WW Norton - in celebration of the centenary of the first publication of the novel, originally entitled  Peter and Wendy.

Drawing on her extensive research into JM Barrie's papers and notes, Maria Tatar guides readers through the many different Peter Pans that haunted his imagination. This new volume showcases a stunning array of photographs and illustrations, many reproduced for the first time, and including Arthur Rackham's stunning pictures from Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens.

There are lots more delights for every Peter Pan enthusiast, not least the reproduction of The Boy Castaways of Black Lane Island, in print for the first time since the only two copies ever produced were published in 1901! The book ends with Barrie's 1920s scenario for a proposed film (never taken up by Paramount) and includes extensive documentation along with a compilation fo responses from young and old to Barrie's work.

A truly beautiful book, enhanced by Maria Tatar's thoughtful and inspiring notes and comments, available through all major bookshops in the US and UK, and also of course through Amazon:

JMBarrie / The Adelphi
« on: May 28, 2011, 07:44:26 AM »
I have recently discovered that The Adelphi, at least the part remaining after the original development was partly demolished in the 1930s, and where JM Barrie lived from 1909 till his death, can be visited. His flat on the 4th floor of 3 Robert Street, is now part of the offices of the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA) and has been much changed since the days he lived there. His study overlooking the Thames, on the corner of the building, is now a conference room but its outlook and style can still be appreciated. The present occupants are very much aware of the heritage of the place and display photographs of the flat in Barrie's days (the ones you can see on this site's database), and it was very nice to see his name very much not forgotten and commemorated. The balsa wood panelling presented by Robert Louis Stevenson, alas, has gone and so has the famous inglenook...

I have added a couple of pictures to the 'JM Barrie's London' set on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/24671749@N07/sets/72157626324576283/) but you can see more on the blog created by Céline, Barrie's greatest advocate in France and translator of Margaret Ogilvy and The Little White Bird: http://rosesdedecembre.blogspot.com/. You don't need to understand French to appreciate her comprehensive set of photos and video clips!

Anyone interested in visiting the Adelphi can call CIPFA on 020 7543 5612 to make an appointment. http://www.cipfa.org.uk/conferencecentre/history.cfm

Peter Pan / Peter Pan on Stage and Screen - New book
« on: April 22, 2011, 05:01:02 PM »
A new edition of Bruce K Hanson's Chronicles of Peter Pan (first published in 1993) is coming out in July, published by McFarland. Entirely revised and updated, the book features new and rare photos, posters, programs and costume designs. An appendix lists virtually every actor who has ever performed in a London, Broadway or Hollywood production of Peter Pan from 1904 to the present. Fantastic new cover too. What more could a Peter Pan fan ask for?

You can also read about the genesis and progress of the book in the author's blog, just started:

JMBarrie / JM Barrie's London
« on: April 12, 2011, 10:02:31 AM »
I have added a new set of pictures on our Flickr Peter Pan Gallery, including pictures of Barrie's London homes,  the Llewelyn Davies family homes,  St John-at-Hampstead churchyard (where the du Mauriers and Llewelyn Davies families are buried). Also included are scenes from Kensington Gardens today, contrasting them with Arthur Rackham's illustrations of the same spot over 100 years ago. I will be adding more in time.

Peter Pan / Peter Pan at Harrods
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:21:30 AM »
This year, Harrods held a Christmas campaign in aid of Great Ormond Street Hospital, themed around Peter Pan. Their famous window displays were inspired not only by Peter Pan but also Peter Pan in Scarlet, the sequel by Geraldine McCaughrean, and particularly David Wyatt's stunning illustrations for both editions published by Oxford University Press.

You can view the windows at http://www.flickr.com/photos/24671749@N07/sets/72157625698074478/

The windows are beautiful - if surprising at times (particularly the one where Peter looks a bit puzzled by the lingerie display!)

General topic / Pet Cemetery
« on: August 24, 2010, 02:22:18 PM »
Some people were asking a while back about the Pet Cemetery, mentioned by JM Barrie in The Little White Bird. It's located in what is now the garden of Victoria Lodge, at the entrance of Hyde Park. You can just see some of the graves through the railings on Bayswater Road. I've recently discovered it can be visited by prior arrangement with the Hyde Park Rangers, by phoning 020 7298 2000 (ask for the Hyde Park Rangers regarding the Pet Cemetery). You need to give them a few days' notice and they may ask for a (small) fee.

It's very atmospheric and charming, if a little neglected (which somehow adds to its quaintness). I'll send Andrew some of the pictures I took if anyone is interested.

Peter Pan / Peter Pan images
« on: July 06, 2010, 02:14:56 PM »
I have put together a collection of images from early editions of Peter Pan (including Arthur Rackam's Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens and the 1907 Peter Pan Keepsake - complete with ads) which I've downloaded onto our Flickr account. It's fascinating to see how different artists and periods have interpreted the story and I hope you will enjoy looking at the images too. I will be adding more in the future, so keep your eye on the link. Let me know what you think!

JMBarrie / Courage
« on: June 14, 2010, 07:52:23 PM »
Someone posted on Wikipedia  this link to Pathe News coverage of J M Barrie  at St Andrews University, accompanied by Ellen Terry, about to give his great 'Courage' address. Brilliant stuff - shame there's no sound. I never thought I would see a shot of Barrie covered in confetti!

Peter Pan / Peter Pan Week
« on: February 11, 2010, 10:06:33 AM »
Hi - I work at Great Ormond St Hospital Children's Charity and look after Peter Pan and JM Barrie's gift.  We have just launched our Peter Pan Week in the UK - join us from the 26-30 April for a week of Peter Pan themed fundraising activities and a Guinness World Record attempt for the largest number of people dressed as Peter Pan! It is primarily aimed at schools across the UK, but anyone can join in the fun and help support the Charity and Hospital. To all of you in the UK, please pass this on to all the children, schools, Peter Pan fans you know - or anyone you think might be interested.
For more information, visit www.peterpanweek.com
If you have any questions, you can contact me at peterpan@gosh.org
