Peter Pan / Re: Is PETER PAN in the public domain?
« on: April 01, 2018, 09:25:07 AM »
Yes and no, as explained above. The play Peter Pan is actually still in copyright until 2023 in the US so royalties are still due on US stage productions.

In the UK, all works by Barrie are in the public domain, but any book, film, stage adaptations of the story of Peter Pan would come under the special terms of the Copyright, Designs & Patents Act which granted Great Ormond Street Hospital a right to royalties in perpetuity (which isn't a copyright).

None of this applies to Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens or The Little White Bird which are in the public domain the world over.

Hi. Actually, that's not quite right: it is only in the US that the play is still in copyright, but not the novel. In the UK (and the rest of Europe), ALL works by Barrie are out of copyright.

Great Ormond Street Hospital have a right to royalty on all commercial productions and adaptations on the original story (granted uniquely by the Copyright Designs & Patents Act of 1988) but this does not apply to sequels, prequels or other derivative works in the UK. So no royalties would be due on your pantomime, as it's a sequel..

The only thing I would warn against is using in your sequel elements that originate from other non-Barrie sources e.g. Disney, Spielberg's Hook, Peter and the Starcatchers etc, which would  come under a different copyright.

Good luck with it!

Database / Re: Notebooks
« on: September 26, 2017, 01:07:19 PM »
Hi. I'm sorry that you are experiencing difficulties searching and viewing material on the database. The whole website is hopefully going to be updated and made easier to manoeuvre in the near future but it might take some time since the administrators can only do this in their spare time (of which they have little). In the meantime, the Beinecke Library might be able to help.

Fantastic news, sounds like it will be a fun event. I've passed on the news to the JM Barrie Literary Society so that they can share the announcement on their Facebook page. Have you sent it to JM Barrie's Birthplace in Kirriemuir for their FB page also?

It would be great if the chair could be acquired by a museum so that it could be enjoyed by the general public. Good luck with that and do keep us updated!

JMBarrie / New production of Dear Brutus November 2017!
« on: September 10, 2017, 07:58:59 AM »
Southwark Theatre in London has just announced their new production of Dear Brutus, 29 November-30 December 2017.  From their website:

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.

1917. In a remote English village there are rumours of an enchanted wood. One of the inhabitants – a mysterious old man – invites eight strangers to stay. They all have something in common. When, one evening, the wood miraculously appears the guests feel compelled to enter. What happens there has the power to change their lives forever…

From J. M. Barrie, the celebrated writer of Peter Pan, The Admirable Crichton and Quality Street, comes this haunting drama of self-revelation. Darkly comic, and presented in a sumptuous production for the play’s centenary year, Dear Brutus is Barrie at his most magical."

No problem, and no apology necessary! Good luck with your research.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. I'm one of the moderators on the site but am afraid you wouldn't find much information about JMB's ancestry here, as it mainly concerns his works and his relationship with the Llewelyn Davies. You might be more successful if you contacted the Kirriemuir Heritage Trust (or even the Moat Brae Trust) as they might have more information and contacts about the family, and point you in the right direction.

http://www.kirriemuirheritage.org.uk
http://www.peterpanmoatbrae.org

Over the years, there have been other people researching their family ancestry and links with the Barries, so if you scroll down the "J M Barrie" sub-section in the forum, you can read posts and questions about his genealogy, and possibly contact them via their emails.

I hope this helps. If I think of other sources, I'll post an update.

Hello Stephen.  I'm one of the moderators on this page, so welcome to this forum.

Great news that Mary Rose is being stage at Pitlochry Festival Theatre - it's a wonderful and very moving play.

You may be interested to know that a JM Barrie Literary Society has been founded and will be launched on the 9th of May. Have a look at their website (http://www.jmbarriesociety.co.uk) and their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=jmbarrie%20literary%20society - you could post something on their page to promote your production?

Wishing you every success with your production!

JMBarrie / New J M Barrie Literary Society
« on: May 06, 2017, 09:07:16 AM »
A literary society dedicated to J M Barrie has been founded and will be launched officially on 9th of May, which is of course his birthday. See http://www.jmbarriesociety.co.uk for more details.

Until now, there was no real Barrie Society so it's wonderful news. We hope many members will join and get involved, and that the society will flourish, both in the UK and internationally.

Follow it on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=jmbarrie%20literary%20society

JMBarrie / Re: Barrie's copyright holder?

Sorry, I should have added that even if Samuel French no longer represent the Barrie estate on behalf of the Asquiths, they should still have the contact details in their database or address book. Someone in the agency must know, as they would have paid the estate royalties for plays staged in the UK to the estate until the end of 2007, when Barrie's copyright expired. (Several of these plays, such as Dear Brutus, Mary Rose, What Every Woman Knows were staged before then.)

You may have to persevere with Samuel French. They do represent the Asquith estate but because Barrie is out of copyright in the UK, there are only a couple of plays still in copyright in the US and therefore not much call for these. The member of staff you spoke to may have been new (there have been lots of changes recently) and not realised they still officially handle the stage rights of the non-Peter Pan plays on behalf of the Asquith estate.

They also handle Peter Pan stage rights for GOSH, hence the confusion.

Good luck!

The London theatre agents Samuel French represent the Asquith estate for all non-Peter Pan plays and might be able to help you with a contact. www.samuelfrench.co.uk

Otherwise, as Andrew suggested, you'll have to track down Herbert and Cynthia's descendants. The website www.thepeerage.com is helpful (although not very user-friendly) for finding out the names of the children of Michael and Simon Asquith but doesn't of course give any other detail. However, I do remember Ivon Asquith, one of Simon's sons, used to work at Oxford University Press but a quick search indicates he may now be at Edinburgh University Press.

If you do find out more, please could you post any details on this website, for future enquiries? Many thanks!

What a wonderful thing to have! I would have thought either the National Trust of Scotland for their Barrie's Birthplace in  Kirriemuir or perhaps the Moat Brae Trust in Dumfries would be interested?
