General topic / Peter Pan in Make Room for Daddy
« Last post by Dani1923 on December 18, 2020, 04:31:00 PM »
Here’s a whole episode dedicated to Peter Pan from the 50s/60s show Make Room for Daddy, later called The Danny Thomas Show. This episode aired in 1955.

The episode is about the son Rusty totally believing in Peter Pan and wanting to fly away to Neverland after seeing the Mary Martin musical. His father Danny however wants Rusty to think realistically and tries to make him stop believing with the help of an old and curmudgeon theatre worker, but the plan backfires and Rusty’s belief in magic makes the men realize that being a kid at heart is not so bad!

My favorite line in the episode is when the old theatre worker is talking about Peter Pan to Rusty and he says “ I thought I hated him, but I don’t! I’m just jealous of him!”

This line makes me think this might be why Captain Hook doesn’t like Peter Pan! 🤔

General topic / Peter Pan in Don’t Look Under the Bed

Here’s scenes from the 1999 Disney Channel Original Movie Don’t Look Under the Bed that reference Peter Pan.

There are actually Peter Pan elements in the plot of this movie, like holding on to childhood while you still have it and having faith in order something seemingly imaginary to be real.

If you want to watch it, the whole movie is on YouTube divided into little scenes like this, or you can watch it on Disney Plus if you have it!

General topic / Peter Pan in Look Who’s Talking Now

Here’s a scene from the 1993 movie Look Who’s Talking Now, where the little girl tries to fly while watching the Peter Pan musical.

It reminds of how Barrie had to make it clear in the play that you needed fairy dust to fly because apparently young children were going to the hospital attempting to fly without it! 😬

And apparently the girl in this scene wasn’t paying close attention to the musical because in the scene she’s watching, they say you need the fairy dust to fly! I guess she somehow missed that part! 😬😂

General topic / Hook Deleted Scene

Here’s a deleted scene of Hook incorporating a piece of dialogue from Peter and Wendy!

I know Hook is not a good sequel to Peter Pan and makes no sense continuity wise, but I have to give Spielberg credit where credit is due, he did do at least some Peter Pan homework for this movie! According to him, his mother read him Peter and Wendy as a child, and he felt a deep connection to the story and character.

Do I wish the movie was more connected to the ending of the original story, of course! But the movie does have interesting “easter eggs” to the Peter Pan story sprinkled throughout the movie and it seemed Spielberg did actually care about the source material! Which is more than I can say for the people who made the Pan movie 5 years ago, who probably just went off their memories of the general story and wrote a prequel story from that instead of actually reading the book and connecting the prequel story to the original!

Here’s a scene from E.T. the Extra Terrestrial where the mother reads Peter and Wendy to Gertie.

This movie was directed by Steven Spielberg, who would later direct Hook.

I have this on my kindle, but have yet to read it. Perhaps this winter break. I would have loved, loved to see Ben Whishaw and Judi Dench play Peter and Alice (the original actors for this play). That would've been something. They're both sublime. I don't know how good or accurate the play is though. Will comment upon reading! Have you finished it yet, Dani1923?
