Movies About Children Inspiring Children’s Books

For fans of The Lost Boys film (and if you’re here, you probably are), here are links to other movies based on true stories about children inspiring famous works of children’s literature.

Dreamchild (1985)- I’ve only seen the young Alice Liddell scenes with Charles Dodgson (played by our very own Barrie, Ian Holm), and even though I don’t think the relationship is totally accurate to what happened in real life, it’s still performed really well by Ian and Amelia Shankley (young Alice), and it’s probably the only film depicting this relationship we are ever going to get. Though you never know!

Goodbye Christopher Robin (2017)- A biopic of how the relationship between A.A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin Milne inspired the elder Milne to write the Winnie-the-Pooh books, and how the success of the books impacted the family in positive and negative ways.

Not good video quality, so I recommend you buy the DVD online. But the audio is fine.

The Tale of Beatrix Potter (1982)- This was a 2-Part Mini-Series, but only the first part is on YouTube divided into 4 parts. The second part is who knows where. This biopic tells the story of how Beatrix Potter came to write “The Tale of Peter Rabbit”. Potter came up with the story while writing letters to entertain her governess’ son Noel who was ill from scarlet fever.

I’ll still include links to The Lost Boys here because why not?

A biopic film is supposedly going to be released next year called “Banking on Mr. Toad” about Kenneth Grahame and how his son Alastair was the inspiration for him to write “The Wind in the Willows” and how despite the book’s success, the family still struggles, especially when it comes to Alastair and his health and behavioral problems.

Adding another movie to the list:

The Dreamer of Oz (1990)-

https://youtu.be/RbPu6PM2Gq0

A biopic about how L. Frank Baum wrote the “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz”. The character of Dorothy was partially inspired by Baum’s wife’s niece Dorothy Gage, who died at 5-months old. It is said that Baum’s wife Maud was so distraught by Dorothy’s death that Baum decided to name the girl protagonist of a story he was writing after her. I discovered this movie’s existence yesterday and watched it today. It was pretty good!

I have no knowledge of Baum’s real-life story, so I don’t know to what extent the movie is in accuracy, but after watching the movie I did discover a few creative liberties. In the movie, Dorothy Gage is 6-years-old when she dies. Baum decides to write down the “Magical Land” story that he was telling Dorothy and his sons partly because of his grief of Dorothy’s death and to honor her since he came up with some of the story while trying to entertain her while she was sick in bed. The temporary rivalry between him and his mother-in-law, Matilda Joslyn Gage, is also completely fictional. Also in the movie, Baum and his wife have three sons, in real-life they had four sons.

In my opinion, this movie was entertaining on its own and I’d recommend a watch!
