Peter Pan / Peter Pan and Wendy Review
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 28, 2023, 04:21:43 PM »
I just finished watching Peter Pan and Wendy on Disney+ and my first thought after watching it was, “Well, that was lame!”
In fact I thought that through many parts of the movie!
I’m just doing a pretty quick review today because I have stuff I need to do today, but my plan is I’m going to re-watch the movie tomorrow and see if maybe any of my initial thoughts have changed, and I will do a more detailed review!
The movie was mostly pretty boring and I can’t imagine any child who would have fun watching this movie!
As far as the story, the movie just went through the motions of the story without adding anything interesting to it. The stuff they did add was not surprisingly very dumb, well except for one part, but I’ll get to that!
The script was just very poorly written! Although, like I said, there is one part of the movie I found actually interesting and there are good very little things that happen here and there, but for the most part, this movie was bad!
All the characters are boring. Except for Wendy, she was annoying and boring.
The acting was meh.
Peter just does some things, but he felt like secondary or at times even background character compared to Wendy. And of course he’s not as mischievous and devilish as his play or book counterpart. Basically, as Barrie once said about the Peter Pan statue “It doesn’t show the Devil in Peter!”. They do show him being sensitive, but he’s actually too sensitive to the point of being super out of character, but I’ll talk about that tomorrow in the detailed review! Honestly, it kind of felt like he was only in the movie because he had to be. I definitely felt the same way for all the characters besides Hook.
The Lost Children, oh sorry, I mean just the Lost Boys, are just there because they had to be. They barely do anything. In fact, I don’t think they said their names to Wendy or each other. Besides the twins and Slightly, because I’ve talked about Noah Matthews Matofsky who plays Slightly (who’s supposed to be the leader of the Lost Boys, I guess while Peter’s away, but it seemed like Tiger Lily was their leader) and he has Down Syndrome, but other than them I have no idea which kid plays the other Lost Boys. And of course I have to talk about how they’re all called Lost Boys even though there’s Lost Girls in the movie! Why aren’t they called Lost Children? Why couldn’t at least one of the girls say that they were a Lost Girl? I was excited to finally see Lost Girls be in a Peter Pan movie, which there technically still are, but I wished one of them at least said Lost Girl once!
Tinker Bell is just there because she has to be. They add that Peter doesn’t listen to Tinker Bell for some reason except he clearly listens to her during the fight scene in Skull Rock.
The pirates look bland. I actually agreed with a comment someone made on YouTube about how Disney made 5 Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and yet the pirates in this movie look this bland! The pirates in the POTC movies always looked great, even if the writing in some of the movies weren’t, but anyways…
Captain Hook….where do I begin? Basically, I think Jude Law was miscast in this role. I will say he is trying, but he just doesn’t fit the role. The bad writing also doesn’t help! The best live-action Hook so far is still Jason Isaacs. Unless you count Ian Holm when he plays Hook in Peter Pan in Michael’s Nursery in The Lost Boys, then that obviously is the best Captain Hook performance!

The last things I will talk about for now is some spoilers, again I’ll talk about way more in the detailed review tomorrow, but if you haven’t seen the movie and don’t want to be spoiled don’t read on:

I ended up being wrong about the movie not including the kiss scene, it is there, except really only half of it is there, if you’ve seen the movie you’ll know what I’m talking about, and by time the second half of what’s usually in that scene eventually happens later on in the movie, it’s too little too late and they really should have just left that part out entirely!

I will say that John and Michael getting kidnapped by the pirates and almost getting drowned in Skull Rock not long after they arrive in Neverland was okay, except it’s kind of ruined because of Jude Law’s underwhelming performance.

Wendy being the mother to Peter and the Lost Boys is scrapped. So is Captain Hook wanting her to be his mother, but I’ll talk about that more in a second! Peter just wants Wendy to be his friend.

Although Peter brings Wendy to Neverland to tell stories and the Lost Boys expect to her to tell them a story, she never tells them a single story, she just sings them a lullaby, which is fine, but couldn’t she have told them at least ONE story before she sung to them??

Now to talk about the one part of the movie that I actually found interesting! After Hook and the pirates kidnap Wendy and the Lost Boys and put them in a jail cell on the Jolly Roger, Captain Hook actually talks to Wendy about how he misses his mother! That was great! And I actually thought this would be the moment that he would force Wendy to be his mother, but nope! He never thinks of doing that and he just sentences them all to die! Then right after that, Wendy does offer to sacrifice herself to him to save the Lost Boys from getting killed, and that could’ve been another perfect moment for Hook to force Wendy to be his mother, but nope! He just says that all the children should die!

And actually Hook missing his mother ties back to an important new addition to the plot— the Captain Hook and Peter backstory….
But I’m going to talk more about that tomorrow, because I have a LOT more to say about that!

Peter Pan / Unmade John Hughes Peter Pan Disney Live-Action Remake
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 24, 2023, 04:21:39 PM »
Back in the ‘90s, Disney was starting to make live-action remakes of their classic animated films. Unlike today though, the 90’s remake phase didn’t last very long, only doing four films between 1994 and 2000 and only doing adaptations of The Jungle Book and 101 Dalmatians. Disney didn’t do another live-action remake until 10 years later in 2010 with Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland remake which became the first Disney movie to make over $1 billion globally and that started the Disney live-action remake trend as we know it today.
Recently I found out that during the short-lived Disney live-action remake phase of the ‘90s, in 1995, John Hughes was writing the screenplay and possibly going to direct and produce a Peter Pan live-action remake!
In case you don’t know, John Hughes was a screenwriter, director, and producer most famous for his teen comedies of the 1980s like The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Sixteen Candles, but he also had his hand in a lot of kid’s movies of the ‘90s like Home Alone, Dennis the Menace, and Beethoven, and he did some remakes of old movies like Miracle on 34th Street and Flubber (a remake of Disney’s The Absent-Minded Professor). He had also already written the screenplay for Disney’s live-action remake 101 Dalmatians which was released in 1996. I’m guessing the Peter Pan remake would have been released sometime between 1997 and 1999.
Hughes sadly passed away in 2009.
These are two articles from 1995 talking about Hughes being involved in the Peter Pan remake:

July 1995: https://www.tampabay.com/archive/1995/07/27/live-action-pan-is-in-the-wings/?outputType=amp

August 1995: Los Angeles Timeshttps://www.latimes.com › archivesToo-True Tales : Remakes of Four Animated Classics as Live-Action ...

Though I love John Hughes’ teen comedies, (Breakfast Club and Ferris Bueller being my favorite films of his) admittedly, his projects and his writing had significantly dropped in quality in the ‘90s, but there’s a part of me that’s curious to know what his version of Peter Pan would have been like. Actors that Hughes worked with actually compared his personality to Peter Pan.

Peter Pan / More Peter Pan and Wendy Clips
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 23, 2023, 11:40:06 PM »
Here are more clips from Peter Pan and Wendy that were released outside the Walt Disney Studios YouTube channel. I decided to clump these clips together on one topic for convenience and also I have quite a bit to say about them.

What’s a Wendy- https://youtu.be/oSwd1alAqGU

Nothing Changes-https://youtu.be/bIDh-un8jwY

Tiger Lily Rides In- https://youtu.be/yHpBtYbuKq8

Yeah, so with every clip I’ve watched that has come out so far from this movie, the excitement that I had after watching the trailers lessens significantly!
I’ve already talked about how not excited I am for Captain Hook’s portrayal in this movie, but now I have to talk about Wendy…..
So far Wendy in these clips is very annoying! I don’t blame the actress at all for this, I blame the writing and directing, both done by David Lowery. Although Disney executives might have had a big part in that as well.
She seems to doing a lot of complaining in this movie about about what happens in Neverland and what the characters do, including Peter, which is weird because in the trailers and in the plot description it’s clear that Wendy wanted to go with Peter to Neverland so that she wouldn’t have to go to boarding school and have to grow up, so why is she complaining?
Also I don’t know why they have her say, “I’m from London, England, where gentleman do not harm children!” when in the early 1900s or 1910s (I don’t know exactly when this movie takes place), boys were canned in boarding schools, which Wendy should probably know about.
Peter’s facial expressions in the first two clips are the same blank expression no matter what he says. Again, I don’t blame the actor, I solely blame David Lowery for that since the director is of course supposed to tell the actor how to act in a scene.
I’m glad Peter says “To die would be an awfully big adventure!” in this movie, except it’s kind of ruined because of the delivery, the wooden facial expression, and the fact that Hook says part of the line with him. Why? And why did Peter brace himself so much when Hook was about to kill him? Barrie’s Peter wouldn’t do that, he would stand there gentleman-like as Hook killed him, maybe even smiled a bit. Like the F.D. Bedford illustration from the first edition of the novel with Peter on Marooner’s Rock. And why isn’t Tinker Bell doing anything to stop Hook from killing Peter even though she’s flying right next to him? Unless Peter told her not to do anything, which I doubt he did!
I don’t like how Wendy and Tiger Lily treat Peter. They don’t believe he can defeat Hook by himself for some reason, even though they should have complete faith in him! He’s the leader of Neverland! He’s a wonderful boy! He’s possibly an all-powerful entity (though no one knows who or what he is) that can never die (unless maybe he wanted to die)! Why are they treating him like some little kid who has no idea what he’s doing?
I have a lot less confidence in this movie than I had a little over a week ago….

Peter Pan / 2015 Peter and Wendy Movie on YouTube!
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 22, 2023, 09:20:43 PM »
Someone uploaded 2015’s Peter and Wendy, or as I call it the GOSH Peter Pan movie, on YouTube! I discovered this today, but it’s actually been on YouTube since 2020 and I have no idea why I never saw it during my previous searches for this movie, but whatever.
I highly HIGHLY recommend this movie!
It’s probably the best Peter Pan movie adaptation ever made and will probably be better than the upcoming Peter Pan and Wendy!

Peter Pan / Captain Hook in Peter Pan and Wendy
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 22, 2023, 12:46:28 AM »
Disney released these two videos yesterday regarding Captain Hook in Peter Pan and Wendy. The first is a clip from the movie and second is a featurette of the cast and crew talking about Hook’s character in this movie.
I highly recommend that you watch these videos before you read what I’m about to say because I’m going to go on a little rant!

https://youtu.be/T7RxBPFvGhY

https://youtu.be/v4EjGl1fH6Q

Regarding the first video, apparently I was wrong about Hook killing that pirate when he shot them through the door. That’s very disappointing! When I thought Hook had killed a pirate in the trailer, I was surprised and impressed that Disney allowed Hook to kill someone, but nope they actually didn’t! Give the animated movie this, at least Hook actually killed someone! He’s supposed to be someone that people, especially children, fear. That’s why Barrie has Hook kill someone almost immediately after we meet him in the book!
I shouldn’t be surprised that Disney probably won’t let Hook kill anyone, but I’m still very disappointed!
In fact, I think Hook seems more goofy in this movie than in the animated one! This Hook doesn’t seem to have any menace at all! I can’t imagine this Hook scaring many children who watch the movie!
Maybe I’m jumping the gun a little bit since the movie hasn’t come out yet, but I haven’t like the clips I’ve seen of Hook in general mostly from the second trailer and this featurette talking about him. Maybe Jude Law was just miscast? Anyway, I have a feeling I’m not going to like Hook in this movie!
And just like in the Darling nursery clip, I don’t like the music! It sounds too cartoony!

Peter Pan / Peter Pan and Wendy: Darling Nursery Clip
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 22, 2023, 12:44:38 AM »
Disney released some clips yesterday and today involving some of the characters.
This clip is from the Darling Nursery where Tinker Bell tries to help Peter kidnap Wendy (I’m guessing.) and her, John, and Michael see Tinker Bell and meet Peter.

Nothing much to say about this clip except I don’t like the music.

In another topic I’m going to talk about the videos released involving Captain Hook.

Peter Pan / Re: My 1989 PP screenplay
« Last post by Dani1923 on April 20, 2023, 03:31:58 PM »
Thank you for your reply Andrew!
And thank you for shedding light on some things! My analysis probably read like gobbledygook to you since you haven’t read the script in over 30 years and it was very kind of you to read it despite that!
That’s exciting that you’re making a screenplay website! I will definitely check it out when it launches!
My ambition is to become a playwright and theatre director one day, so I would love to write my own version of Peter Pan and direct Barrie’s version of the play one of these days!
